Kour Magic Gymnastics

This is not exactly a new project, but I've been super lazy with posting. This is for a documentary class I am taking this quarter. I have no idea where it's going right now so if anyone's got suggestions feel free to comment!

the trip....

So overall the trip was..........good. I think. I learned a lot anyway. I think it was really helpful to meet with everyone, an awesome opportunity. It was both exciting and stressful. Exciting to go to all the places we went and see what it's all about. Some of the places we visited are ones I never thought I would have the chance to see in person and meet with people from there. However it was a little nerve-wrecking and stressful hearing what they all had to say. It makes me nervous I'll never get to the point they are at, but after hearing over and over again how if you really want something, you will get there eventually, I have some hope.

And I'll write more about this when I catch up on sleep a little!

NYC Day 4

ICP-Mexican Suitcase exhibit was pretty unbelievable, I had heard of it and sort of knew a bit of the background but to actually see all the negatives and get to read about it was awesome

TIME was probably my favorite place we have been to all week. If I did have the chance to work at or with any of these magazines, papers, organizations, it would most definitely be Time. The thing that seemed to really be stressed there was having your own style. You want people to recognize your photos as yours. Got to see all of Yuri Kozyrev's photos which were amazing.

Sports Illustrated seemed to cause a little drama within the group, but I'm glad we got to go. I realize my dad has a better chance of getting a job with SI than I do, but it was really great to see such amazing photos and listen to Steve Fine talk about the business and how important it is to make pictures that tell a story. That wasn't really what I was expecting to hear at a sports place, but that gives me hope!

NYC Day 3

Today was probably my favorite so far. Met a lot of cool people, learned a lot. Everything that was said today helped me to understand how much there is out there and how hard you have to work to get there.

All the places we visited today were pretty cool. Something that was said at all three places is "don't be an asshole." Other than that we learned a lot about how important metadata/captions are.
"Have a path in mind, be committed, and continue to fight for it."-Getty
Pay attention/be observant, know your market, be honest always. Honesty was something else that I heard over and over. Most of the places we have visited have told us that having a reasonably good image with good information/caption is better than either nothing at all or making up an excuse for why you missed something important.

NYC Day 1

Today, we started by waking up after no sleep.
But then we went to Frank Fournier's studio and he spoke to us for a while.
He was interesting and had lots of wise words for us. It was good to hear his view on how to come up with story ideas and then pursuing them. I got a better idea of how important it is to "create myself." I guess it helps to hear it from someone else. It's important to diversify yourself from others, don't copy, but instead be inspired.

Facing Change was pretty cool too because not only did we have our portfolios reviewed by Alan Chin and Anthony Suau, but we got to see their work as well. We learned about their business and the other businesses they have been involved with. I got some advice on how to improve my story and different angles I could have taken or can still take if I continue on with stories I've already started. Oh, and I taught Alan Chin how to play flip cup. That is all.

Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament 3-18-11

Yesterday, I went to a boxing competition for the first time. I went to follow a story I've been doing on a local boxer and this is some of what I came out with. Much more to come though
